The heart of your writing whilst sounding reasonable initially, did not sit very well with me after some time. Someplace throughout the paragraphs you managed to make me a believer unfortunately just for a while. I still have got a problem with your leaps in assumptions and you might do well to fill in those breaks. In the event you can accomplish that, I could definitely end up being fascinated.

It's interesting to see what committment calls for and what peoples expectations are or are not. In the example above, it was clear that leadership that caters to peoples desires, fails, and the objective is not accomplished. Our objective as Christians is to reach out to the lost and hurting no matter the cost but it is that very thing that stops most people from accomplishing the great commission. It also stands to reason that those who are convinced of their walk with God and are enthusiatic about fulfilling their purpose will rise as leaders within their communities and will attract others to do the same. Unfortunately, once the followers realize the cost, they start to retreat from their proposed committments and it is in this retreat that they lose heart and are over taken by fear.

When General Frank Savage said, "consider yourselves already dead" (Zanuck, 1949), it reminded me of another movie, a Band of Brothers where one of the paratroopers confesses to his sargent, when he jumped out of the plane, that he immediately dug a fox hole and laid there until it was safe. The sargent asked him why he thought he did that and his response was that he was afraid. His sargent responded by saying, no it was because he still had hope to live. Before the trooper came out of that plane, he needed to have the resolve that he was already dead and was on borrowed time. In a very similar sense, we too must have the same resolve to accomplish anything of worth. Once a Christian has come to the understanding that they are on borrowed time, then and only then will they take the courage to stand strong for what they believe and dare to follow in the steps of Christ. Christianity and ministry are not for the faint of heart because if a person has that mindset they will not stand when it comes time to take courage in the face of danger or in the loneliest of times when we feel that God is not around.
